Brand New Testament

If you’re looking for high-concept cinema, you’ve come to the right place: in Brand New Testament, God exists. He lives in Belgium. He hangs out in his bathrobe all day drinking beer, watching sports and being cruel to his browbeaten wife and defiant young daughter. God also likes to muck about on his computer, making bad things happen on Earth and inventing annoying laws, including the dictum that dropped toast must always land jam-side down. One day, God’s errant daughter sneaks into his office and proceeds to send everyone on Earth a message informing them exactly how long they have to live. This plunges the natural order into utter chaos of course, and in its wake, the girl escapes her prison-like home in search of apostles to help her compose her own testament. THE WORD: Featuring a cast of famous French actors including the great Catherine Deneuve (pictured, above center) this unusual film will bring to mind the whimsy of Amelie, although this tale is decidedly darker. COMING TO: Theaters
