The services provided by Fenway Community Health in Boston include primary health care, specialty care (HIV/AIDS, obstetrics, gynecology, gerontology, podiatry and nutritional counseling), mental health and addictions services, complementary therapies (chiropractic, massage, and acupuncture), health promotion, violence prevention and recovery, family and parenting services, including alternative insemination. Fenway operates the nation’s first community-based HIV research program. The program has been conducting long-term epidemiological research since 1985. Fenway is one of eight sites in the US that was selected by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases to recruit participants for the first clinical trials of an HIV vaccine. Fenway also conducts a variety of clinical drug trials in its medical department. In 1996, Fenway participated in the state’s first lesbian health services study and provided testimony at the national hearing on lesbian health research issues. In July of 2000, Fenway Community Health was named an HIV Prevention and Treatment Network (HPTN) site by the National Institutes of Health. Fenway Community Health is affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. All physicians hold faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School. Research affiliations include Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Brown University Medical School.
