Today you are one step closer to a new you, where you feel empowered and on a positive path to growth and well-being. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can’t change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. If you’re looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you’re just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Trusting a therapist well enough to call for an appointment and enter a professional relationship with me takes courage, and I honor and respect the need to know something about me before taking that kind of step. Well, first, I’m a licensed psychotherapist who identifies as openly gay and openly HIV-positive. I say that because for over 15 years I have specialized in working with gay men and people with HIV, though of course I am happy to work with many different kinds of people. My job is to help gay men and others improve their health, quality of life, and personal growth by helping them overcome barriers and achieve personal goals. I’ve been licensed in California since 1997, and have been doing this work full-time since 1992. I’m also the author of a book, and number of articles and columns (see the tab above for those, elsewhere on this website), and I give workshops as a public speaker. I also do consulting work to organizations and the media on gay men’s’ issues.

I believe there can be value in understanding “how” and “why” we have become a certain way and continue patterns that do not serve us; however, once we have figured that out, I like to get right to removing obstacles and having the life that you want. I believe in there being a “fit” with a therapist and a patient, and once we know there is a fit, I work very directly with sensitive insight and very caring confrontation around what may be in the way of you achieving your goals. I have been fortunate to have had a lot of experiences in the world and my clients often say that… “I get them”…, but most valuable is that I am a kind person with a keen sense of humor.

I work in a dynamic interpersonal, interactive, non-judgemental style. I believe that today’s therapy client wants a therapist who not only listens, but also offers feedback. Patients want to feel a human connection with their therapist, someone with a commitment to help them on their journey of self discovery, which often entails looking at painful and troubling details of their lives. I believe that it’s not that you change in therapy, but rather that you reveal and embrace your true self, celebrate your uniqueness, and become open to the infinite possibilities that your life has to offer. Because I realize that many people who would like to enter Psychotherapy or Psychoanalysis hesitate to do so because their work schedules are not conducive to a specific fixed weekly appointment slot, I offer flexible appointment hours for busy professionals. I also offer my patients telephone sessions when necessary. I completed my Graduate training at NYU. I am also a graduate of National Institute for the Psychotherapies [NIP]; Having successfully completed their intensive four-year training Program, I have a Certificate in Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. I am certified as a Psychoanalyst and licensed as a LCSW Psychotherapist.
