D.C. for Two

Written by | Travel

Looking for a romantic getaway? We’ve got several good reasons why Washington, D.C., might be your next great escape.

You may think of Washington, D.C., as a destination that’s all about museums and monuments, but it’s also got all the ingredients for a memorable couple’s outing, whether your idea of date night starts with seats on the aisle or a spot on the dance floor. Here are a few items to place on your D.C. itinerary for two.

Work Out

D.C. was recently ranked the second fittest metro area in the nation; see proof at any of the six locations of Vida Fitness. The gay-owned gym network offers everything from yoga to spin classes plus high-end spa products in an atmosphere that will make you and your partner feel welcome. vidafitness.com

In Concert

As they offer over 60 performances a year, there’s always something to look forward to from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. To celebrate Valentine’s on February 12 and 14, the 300-plus-member group will make the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church shake with their “Love Rocks” concert — showcasing selections from Freddie Mercury, Melissa Etheridge, Adele, U2 and The Beatles. gmcw.org

On Stage

Boasting memorable tunes like “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and “The Night They Invented Champagne,” Gigi was one of the most beloved musical films of the mid-20th century. It’s been reconceieved for the stage in a world-premiere production that follows its titular free-spirited young lady and a wealthy playboy in turn-of-the-century Paris. Scheduled to run through February 12, the production’s title role will be played by pop star Vanessa Hudgens. kennedy-center.org

Night Out

Often referred to as simply Cobalt, D.C.’s premier gay bar and nightspot actually incorporates a restaurant (Level One), a lounge (30degrees) and a recently renovated dance-floor level (Cobalt). Offering an eclectic lineup of DJs, parties and shows, there are plenty of reasons to hit this nightspot to get your blood pumping and the cocktails flowing. Late Bite

Chances are — after a night of fun on the town — you’ll be in the mood for a nosh or a nightcap. For that, head to Annie’s Paramount Steakhouse, which has become a Dupont Circle mainstay — offering delicious food and spirits 24 hours on weekends, which makes it a perfect choice for addressing late-night cravings. annies.biz

Hood Hopping

It’s worth noting that Dupont Circle is not D.C.’s only prominent gayborhood. The areas around Logan Circle and U Street are also great places to meet gay people and find gay-owned-and-operated bars, restaurants and other businesses.

Mall Walking

The National Mall may be bustling by day, but stop by for a late-night stroll to see a different side of it. It’s a unique time to enjoy views of the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the Capitol dome — all beautifully lit in the evening and surprisingly hushed once the tourists have retreated for the day.
