Bowery Film Festival
November 17, 2018 | 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Bowery Film Festival returns on Saturday, November 17th at Bowery’s Katra Lounge with 12 powerful selections highlighting LGBTQ and non-binary communities, women struggling to find their place in Trump’s America, and the dark side of the internet consumed with sex addiction, dating, public shaming, and open relationships.
Over 60% of the selections were either written, directed or produced by female filmmakers. Some of the highlighted works include Occupied, a short film that chronicles the various awkward and uncomfortable situations that can occur in a gender-neutral bathroom and how a diverse group of characters functions in a bathroom occupied by both men, women, trans and non-binary people; Brian, a chance encounter with a former lover forces a broken man to confront his past. In his mission statement the writer/producer Jonothon Mitchell says “As a gay man I yearn for more accurate and realistic LGBT representation in film. With this short film I hope to take the first steps on my path to accomplishing that feat;” Subverse, a sci-fi web-series about the dark side of the Internet. Addiction. Online dating. Privacy. Public shaming… In an alternate reality where everyone spends all their time indoors staring at computer screens, Max agrees to go on a date in the ‘outside’ world. It doesn’t go well. Filled with self-loathing, he returns home and plunges headfirst into a drunken, hallucinogenic trip through the dark net; and A Little Sister, in Trump’s America, a young woman meets her father, brother and some friends in a bar to celebrate her birthday. Among these four familiar men, she struggles to find her place.
The Bowery Film Festival is determined to bring about a cinematic revolution unseen since the 70’s, striving to discover a new wave of renegade filmmakers creating raw, gritty, funny, and bombastic art in one of the culturally rich and progressive NYC neighborhoods. Now in our 2nd edition, our mission is simple: to showcase the works from filmmakers of all walks of life regardless of gender, race, age, creed, sexual orientation, or political affiliation and provide a platform to jumpstart their careers. We showcase films that dissent radically in form, technique, or content from the mainstream and present adventurous works that challenge commercial and audience expectations.
