Song Squad of New York Pride show at Arlene’s Grocery
June 5 | 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Song Squad of New York is an informal chorus with a live backup band. At each unique event, Song Squad’s choir director, Uton Onyejekwe, helps participants make two previously-announced songs performance-ready. After an hour of arranging harmonies, correcting vocal phrasings, and making other improvements to the first song, Song Squad’s video crew shoots a live performance for a future online release. The process is repeated for the second song.
Throughout June, Song Squad will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, a key event in America’s LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. Drag queen Charmagne Aültra will dazzle as the guest host for these shows. The group has curated a special list of fun and empowering Pride songs with which to celebrate. The month will kick off with two classics, “Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” at Arlene’s Grocery (June 5th – Lower East Side). More songs that are important for LGBTQ+ groups will be announced later for events at the Footlight (June 19th – Queens), and the 3 Dollar Bill (June 24th – Brooklyn). The 3 Dollar Bill show will also be a benefit event for the Brooklyn Community Pride Center.
There are no auditions for Song Squad and anyone who enjoys singing is encouraged to participate. All skill levels are welcomed and prior choir experience or preparation for each event are not requirements. Events are 21+ and are held at venues selling alcohol (unless otherwise advertised).
