Trans comedian Julia Scotti will appear at Stand-Up NY, along with the documentary film, “Julia Scotti: Funny That Way”, based on her life. The documentary follows the New Jersey native who, for decades, was known Rick Scotti, a successful comedian who was hitting his stride in the comedy boom of the 80’s, appearing with the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock and winning Showtime’s Funniest Person in New Jersey contest (he lost the Showtime national to Ellen DeGeneres). Fast forward to now as the trans comedian, and first trans comedian to appear on “America’s Got Talent”, returns as “the crazy old lady of comedy” in this tender, funny, and triumphant comeback story, “Julia Scotti: Funny That Way”.
On Sunday, March 13, a very special afternoon is in store at Stand Up NY where “Julia Scotti: Funny That Way” will be screened and after the film, Julia will do a stand-up set.
At a time when the words gender dysphoria and gender reassignment surgery were rarely heard, successful NJ comedian Rick Scotti’s true awakening at age forty-seven led to a new identity as Julia Scotti. And then everyone turned away—former wives, friends, family, comedy world buddies, and most painfully Julia was shut out from any contact with her children. Julia reinvented herself, spent a decade teaching, and then several years ago, stepped back on stage and began her journey back to the world of comedy that she loves, and her children reached out to her after 15 years of silence.
