Former House of Cards star Kevin Spacey may face legal consequences from the numerous charges of sexual assault lodged against the actor.
According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles District Attorney, a case was presented to prosecutors on April 5 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The case was reported publicly moments ago on CNN.
Beyond that, no additional details were provided, and while CNN has reached out to Spacey’s legal representation for comment, no reply has been received.
It’s unclear at the moment exactly which or how many of Spacey’s alleged sex crimes is under review, although there’s no shortage of male accusers who have talked to the press about the actor’s “predatory” interactions with them — both in the U.S and as head the Old Vic Theatre in London, where Spacey served as artistic director from 2004-2015. British authorities have logged nearly two dozen accusations of inappropriate behavior.
Spacey’s actions came to public light nearly a half year ago, when the star of American Beauty and The Usual Suspects was identified as a sexual predator by actor Anthony Rapp, who is currently playing a gay space explorer on the newst series of the Star Trek franchise. Rapp, now 46, says Spacey made sexual overtures toward him 30 years ago — when Rapp was 14 years old. Spacey would have been 26 at the time.
In a tweeted response, Spacey addressed the allegations in a way that began a firestorm of public condemnation, after he also used the occasion to publicly identify himself as gay for the first time. The actor claimed to be “beyond horrified,” although he also maintained he did not recall the specific events of their encounter.
Shortly thereafter, several staff members of Spacey’s Netflix show House of Cards, lodged similar complaints in the press. Production of the show was halted, and only resumed after the network severed ties with the actor. House of Cards returns to Netflix in the fall, with Robin Wright leading the cast.
