The Full Trailer for Carol Is Here to Ruin Your Holidays

Todd Haynes apparently wants us to have a horrible Thanksgiving. His Oscars catnip Carol debuts the week before, on November 20, and it looks like a film that will leave us emotional wrecks.

Starring Cate Blanchett as the title character, Carol is an adaptation of The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (whose The Talented Mister Ripley adaptation also treated us to Blanchett in glorious ’50s garb). Carol is in a loveless marriage before who then enters an affair with Therese, played by Rooney Mara (nominated for Best Actress for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Roughly, a Far from Heaven for the girls (which was also directed by Haynes, earning nominations for him and Julianne Moore).

The film won the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes Festival, as well as a Best Actress award for Mara. It also stars Sara Paulson and Kyle Chandler.

Come for the moody 1950s trappings; stay for the emotional destruction.
