Tom Hiddleston as You’ve Never Seen Him in “High Rise”

In a futuristic England stylistically reminiscent of the 1970s, A handsome doctor has just moved into a monstrously tall new high-rise apartment building, where the inhabitants’ social statuses ascend as the floors go up.

His neighbors include a faded starlet played by Sienna Miller (pictured), an adulterous documentarian and his pregnant wife, a pompous executive, and the building’s upper-crusty architect. At first, the new arrival revels in the wild party atmosphere, but before long, signs of decay from below become increasingly hard to ignore. The film starts out slightly surreal but rapidly plunges into a dreamlike dystopia — with a look that is both hellish and retro-sexy and a fittingly wicked score by Clint Mansell (of similarly dark fare like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan). THE WORD: Boasting a star-studded cast including Tom Hiddleston, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy and Jeremy Irons, High-Rise delivers a view as gorgeous and scary as staring down from the roof of a skyscraper.
