Abby Nissenbaum – Want to Be Wrong

Critically acclaimed, Nashville-based LGBTQ+ indie-rock artist and advocate Abby Nissenbaum and her video “Gentleman,” the highlight track from her  new  EP  Want to Be Wrong.  Abby divulges, “‘Gentleman’ is an outrageous, rip-roaring, unabashedly LGBTQ country song that serves as a cheeky response to the fantasy “dream man” sold in country music. Sonically, it blends 80s-90s country-pop with a touch of Sapphic honky-tonk attitude. For the music video, I thought it would be humorous to completely rebuke the concept of a tractor-driving, beer drinking, football-playing, big country dream guy by showing me (a barely 5 foot tall, Connecticut-raised, femme lesbian) playing perhaps the most New England sport of all: Tennis. The music video was shot by Oceanna Colgan, and she did an amazing job capturing all the action (“especially when my ball machine freaked out and would only give me NTRP 7.0 drills that I could barely run to, let alone return!”)

Nissenbaum has deep roots in Canada as her grandparents were Holocaust survivors and refugees to Canada. They raised their kids there and still have extensive family there, so it’s no surprises she has a large listenership in Canada. Abby writes from the heart, exploring themes of depression, isolation, and heartbreak, but anchored by messages of hope, empowerment, and community. Complemented by her effortlessly honest and raw vocal delivery, Nissenbaum offers relatable, honest and heartfelt lyricism amidst catchy melodies, beautifully contrasting the energetic indie-rock soundscape which surrounds her.
