As I Was Slaying…
These queens were *just* about to tear the house down when they were rudely eliminated from Canada’s Drag Race, so we’re catching up with them and spilling maximum tea. Welcome to… THE CHOP HOUSE.
Auras are like a-holes; we all have one, but we shouldn’t wave it around willy-nilly. Paolo Perfección is spiritual, sure, but she serves it with a sardonic side of sass.
“If you’re very mindful, if you’re very self-aware and you’re grounded, you’re good in your skin, you’re at peace within your body, I think it’s harder for people to get a rise out of you.” Paolo continues, “I really do believe they go hand in hand.”
Getting voted off CDR might cause a lesser contestant to crumble, but not Paolo. “Ever since I became spiritual, which is over maybe a year ago, I haven’t yelled at anyone. No. I never lost my temper and I think I’m able to have this calm energy about myself.”
Zen is her business, and business is booming. “My whole perspective going onto the show was if I’m gonna go there, I don’t want to have a brand that someone’s already had. Every time I would think of a category, I would think, ‘Okay, what would a basic ass bitch do and what am I going to do?’ Because I think if you’re given the chance to be on TV, why not stand out, you know? I was definitely thinking outside the box, but times two.”
And it paid off in double-time. Over the span of only two episodes, Paolo managed to summon angel realness, trash bag chic, and a falsetto comedy schtick that only canines could hear. “I just went into there being super grateful and like, to make the most out of it, you know? Because you never know how long you’re there for. So you enjoy every second.”
Her fabulousness reached a fever pitch when she lip synced for her life against gal pal Sami Landri. “Raise a Little Hell is a crazy song for a drag queen to do, you know? So I was like, let me just go kooky, let’s have fun.”
Paolo achieved icon status when she ended her performance by bending over, showing off her assets, and revealing the words KEEP ME written in eyeliner pencil on her cheeks.
“It was very much the spur of the moment,” recounts Paolo. “I did the pencil thing, I fully forgot. Like, I don’t know how that happened. I don’t know what struck me. And low key crazy doing all of that and still being sent home. Embarrassing.”
When asked how she managed such perfect penmanship in a hard-to-reach area, Paolo giggles, “All the yoga, baby – very flexible.”
Her downward dog days may be over on Canada’s Drag Race, but Paolo has gained valuable perspective on where she’s been and where it all leads. “Prior to the show, I never even considered myself a drag queen, I think I was always more of a cross dresser. And I do think that there’s a lot of queens nowadays that are a little crossy. So it’s kind of like becoming trendy, if you will. But the girls are always so obsessed with finding a label and, like, ‘oh, what is it that you do?’ Like, baby? Really, I do myself. And I think that’s what I do best at the end of the day.”
The quirky kid from Montréal is having a ball and loving it all.
“I’m releasing some music soon, so that’s really exciting. I know a lot of people love my verse. So just tag along. You never know what I’m up to. I’m such a spur of the moment girl. You never know where you’ll see me again.”
Well, there’s somewhere you’ll definitely find Paolo: her happy place.
“I used to work in the street scene, so I never worked at a gay bar before. I never had sisters or anything. And going in, I– baby, like, we’ve all seen the show. The girls are a little catty. They’re a little bitchy. But all the girls were so sweet, so loving to me. And I think that at that time in my life, that’s really what I was in dire need of. And I’ve found a community of girls that also have sisters and it’s like this big bag of love, basically.”
Love is love is Paolo Perfección. Thanks for keeping us centered, gurl.
