Fox announced a while back that The X-Files is returning; we can trust them now because there’s a full-on, action-packed, two-minute trailer.
This is happening.
It gives us Mulder and Scully, of course, and smartphones too, but we also get Skinner and Smoking Man, which make the exciting percussion almost redundant.
Here’s what we know: It starts on a Friday. It will seem like an attack on America by terrorists or Russia. It will use alien technology the government’s been hiding for 70 years. Here’s what we can assume: It will be the most intense six hours of January.
Series creator Chris Carter has said this isn’t a reboot, but a continuation. Which, given recent series’ reboot efforts, is a good thing. To buoy this claim, he recently released the titles for the new season…
…which, yes, are the exact grainy, VHS-y, ’90s-y, whistle-y titles we knew and loved from 1993 to 2002 (or until 2000 when Agent Doggett came on, if you’re that type of nerd, and it’s The X-Files so you’re obviously that type of nerd).
So: We already trusted Chris Carter, and now we can trust Fox. That’s a lot better than no one.
The new X-Files series debuts Sunday, January 24, 2016 on Fox.
