Bey Meets Bounce, and Big Freedia's Bigger Than Ever

It’s been decades since David Bowie and Sylvester brought androgyny into the spotlight. But nobody today shines a brighter light on that spot of the diversity garden than Big Freedia.

Congrats on another season of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce! What can fans expect this time around?

More drama – season 5 is going to be juicier than any other. I’m not going to give away too much but there’s a lot more that Devon and I continue to go through and some life events happen which I didn’t plan for that have huge consequences.

Congrats as well on your instantly classic cameo on Beyonce’s ‘Formation’ – now that you’ve worked with both her and RuPaul, who else is on your bucket list, collaboratively speaking?

Drake, Madonna and of course the great Patti LaBelle!

Speaking of Ru, would you ever consider being a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race? You’d be fantastic. Also, do you have any favorite queens from the show’s eight seasons?

Of course. I’d love to judge! Kim Chi is my all-time favorite!

Your live shows are always so incredible. What’s the key to making that connection with the crowd and getting them to go totally bonkers / lose their inhibitions?

I give my fans and audience 100% at my shows. It’s a physically grueling show, and I think/hope my fans can tell that and the energy that it requires.

Other than your own, what’s your favorite reality show and/or which programs are you most looking forward to this year – Mariah, Rob & Blac Chyna, a new season of The Real Housewives of NJ?

Love and Hip Hop and The Real Housewives of Atlanta are my favorite shows. I also started watching this fun show called Southern Charm. There’s an amazing diva on that show who I love named Patricia. I can’t wait for Rob and Blac Chyna’s show!

What are your thoughts and/or comments on the dichotomy of LGBTQ related successes and setbacks over the last few years? In particular, it seems like the music touring community was somewhat split on how to approach and/or protest the transphobic North Carolina bathroom bill that recently passed.

I think we are moving more forward than backward. It’s ten steps forward, three back. The fact that we are talking about the rights of trans people is huge!

Regarding fashion – your looks are consistently on point. In your opinion, what are some summer must-haves?

It’s all about bold and sexy – so high shorts, tank tops, bright colors and stripes… and even gingham!

When can we expect to hear some new Freedia music? It feels like it’s been a moment. What can you reveal?

Season 5 will have some of my new music!

Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce (Season 5) premieres June 8 on Fuse.
