REVIEW: Dior and I

Director Frédéric Tcheng, who has previously worked on stirring cinematic portraits of fashion personalities (Valentino: The Last Emperor, co-producer, co-editor and second camera; Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, writer and co-director), delivers another documentary about a fashion icon that is both tasteful and extremely watchable.

This time, Tcheng trains his camera on the legendary House of Dior, now creatively lead by Belgian designer Raf Simons — who is facing the daunting task of creating his first haute couture line. Simons confronts a variety of challenges as he seeks to incorporate new ideas with the essential DNA of Dior.

THE WORD: Though flourished with famous faces like Marion Cotillard, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lawrence and Anna Wintour, the film’s brightest star is Dior himself: Narration from his writings floats elegantly over the film, revealing his sensitivity as an artist and why his legacy endures.
