The Danish Girl is inspired by the lives of Gerda Wegener and Lili Elbe, here played by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne. The film takes place in Copenhagen in 1926, where Redmayne starts out as artist Einar Wegener, who is revered for his landscape paintings. Meanwhile, his wife Gerda, is a lesser-known but still-prominent portrait painter. When Gerda asks her husband to stand in for a model by putting on a dress so she can finish a painting, the experience becomes life-changing. Ultimately, Einar realizes that by trying on “Lili,” he is not merely living a fantasy but finally realizing his true self.
