Gayer Than ‘Twilight’? Stake Tuned!

Queer people are creatures of legend. We are marginalized to the shadows, where we cultivate a fabulously dark style until we suddenly emerge to suck… blood, or wine, or whatever you have handy, thanks.

The LGBTQ community has always shared a romantic kinship with the undead ranks of vampires. Decades before Bram Stoker penned Dracula, Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu created an insatiable character named Carmilla who feasted on her fellow female companions.

Fast-forward a century later to The Hunger, starring Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon as lusty ladies of the night who craved one another’s eternal sensuality. Now, Netflix is capitalizing on the gay/goth connection by producing First Kill, based on the young-adult story by V.E. Schwab.

Pop culture pundits are calling the new series a “gay Twilight,” which prompts the obvious question: wasn’t Twilight the gay Twilight?

We flew like a bat out of hell to Instagram in order to quench our curiosity and, what do you know? We found some #GayVampire realness to tide us over until the release of First Kill.

Mmm, these pics are making us thirsty – time to dig deeper into the cavernous vamp vault to unearth more queerotica.

But vampires can’t have all the fun; what do the #GayWerewolves have to howl about the subject?

Grr supreme! We also stumbled across a few FANGtastic photos lurking in the #HotWerewolves hashtag feed. You’re welcome.

Down boy! First Kill is destined to be more PG-13 than the imagery above, but that doesn’t mean it won’t inspire mature longing and LGBTQ titillation galore. Emma Roberts is producing the show for Netflix, so we can expect some major American Horror Story vibes with a teen-crush garnish.

Speaking of teen crushes, we would be remiss if we didn’t end with a few good ol’ fashioned glimpses of the men who took a wholesome series of vampire novels and dragged them firmly into the realm of queer camp manna. Bite us, boys (and we say that with love).
