Ostensibly, the 1980s Saturday-morning cartoon Jem and the Holograms was intended for six-year-old girls. But with its Technicolor hair, crazy fashions and over-the-top secret-identity-thriller plotlines, it also became a camp classic, beloved — and parodied — by gay men.

But we can’t help but wonder whether the result will have the gloriously outré camp magic of the original or end up being a blasé teeny-bopper makeover.
