Jem and the Holograms: Outrageous or Outraging?

Ostensibly, the 1980s Saturday-morning cartoon Jem and the Holograms was intended for six-year-old girls. But with its Technicolor hair, crazy fashions and over-the-top secret-identity-thriller plotlines, it also became a camp classic, beloved — and parodied — by gay men.

A live-action adaptation hits theaters October 23, starring Nashville’s Aubrey Peeples as the truly outrageous rocker. But we can’t help but wonder whether the result will have the gloriously outré camp magic of the original or end up being a blasé teeny-bopper makeover.
