While reviews of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again can most diplomatically be described as mixed, at least one great thing came out of it. Cher’s terrific performance of the ABBA classic “Fernando” was by most accounts the highlight of the film, and even debuted at 22 on the Adult Contemporary charts upon release. Whether motivated by her sheer enjoyment of working with the material or the fervor of her fans’ reaction, Cher decided that her ABBA renaissance would not end with the soundtrack of the sequel — she’s announced a full new album covering the Swedish pop legends’ material — including title track, “Dancing Queen,” “The Name of the Game,” ”SOS,””Waterloo,””Mamma Mia,” “Chiquitita,” “The Winner Takes It All” and “One of Us.” “I’ve always liked ABBA and saw the original Mamma Mia musical on Broadway three times,” gushed Lé Cher. “After filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking, ‘Why not do an album?’” Cher has already thrilled fans with her cover of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).” The remainder of the album will drop September 28th.
