Olympian Gus Kenworthy Gushes Over BF Matt Wilkas’ YouTube Series

Gus Kenworthy won millions of hearts when he kissed his boo on live TV at the Winter Olympics in February. But it turns out he too is a fanboy.

There are people who hide their sexual orientation until they find it expedient to come out (Hello, Kevin Spacey), while others choose to live their entire lives in the closet. Gus Kenworthy? Just the opposite.

After making headlines two months ago without medaling (although he did at the Sochi Olympics in 2014), Kenworthy and actor/writer Matt Wilkas have been running the red carpet gauntlet of media attention. When we caught up with them at the launch party for the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, they seemed pumped at the opportunity to add another few colors to the diversity and gaiety swirling around them.

Often finishing each other’s sentences, the pair shared stories from their recent wade into the glamor that is Hollywood at the Academy Awards (where they rather publicly crushed on Latino pop star Ricky Martin and his husband, artist Jwan Yosef). But the hot topic of the night was Wilkas’ just-launched YouTube series, Matt and Dan, in which he stars opposite actor/comic writer Daniel Vincent Gordh.

Gordh and Wilkas met in the LA improv troupe the Groundlings (where Paul Reubens developed Pee Wee Herman, and both Will Farrell and Melissa McCarthy got their starts) in 2014. Being gay and possessed of similar comedic instincts, Wilkas and Gordh began to ask themselves, “Why aren’t we making something already.”

Just as Kenworthy pushed the envelope for what’s expected from a sports star, Gordh and Wilkas are trying to move the needle where “what’s gay” in Hollywood is concerned. Time after time, both would submit material to the Tinseltown powers-that-be, only to be told that their content was the wrong flavor of gay.
