The View from Afar: A Gay Voice in Indonesia Speaks Out

My name is Agoes Rudianto, and I’m an independent photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

I offer my work about “A Night with Cabaret Dancer” to publish on Metrosource. I think you would find this interesting for you.

To mention a country with a high intolerance and many discrimination cases, Indonesia would be one of them. In 2016, there were many statements of refusing LGBT rights that came from government officials, radical religious movements and also religious organizations. This serious thing has become a major threat for our minority group. They often are intimidated, verbally or not. But in Indonesia, not every area is doing so. Bali, the most prominent tourism island in Indonesia, offers a different side. It comes from a bar called Bali Joe. Bali Joe, established about seven years ago, relates closely with the growth of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and the local transgender community. In Bali, LGBT people are treated fairly. They are able to work in hotels, spas, and bars, which would be nlikely in other cities in Indonesia. In Bali, the LGBT community is able to express itself freely.

You can see my work on my personal website on agoesrudianto.com

Best regards
Agoes
