Richard Avedon on Christian Dior

In Dior by Avedon, a look back on iconic images of stars dressed to kill.

Texts by Justine Picardie and Olivier Saillard | Rizzoli; $175
In 1947, Christian Dior gave postwar Paris a greatly welcome jolt of creative energy with the presentation of his first haute couture show. That same year marks the commencement of his collaboration with amazing American photographer Richard Avedon. Over the course of almost 30 years, that relationship would change not only the art of fashion photography but also the world’s relationship with fashion itself. In the process, Avedon helped turn unknown models — like Twiggy and China Machado — into boldface names. Meanwhile, his portraits for Dior of entertainers such as Marlene Dietrich, Anjelica Huston and Barbra Streisand remain iconic. Dior by Avedon, new from Rizzoli ($175), gloriously presents some 150 images from this partnership, including some published here for the first time.
