“Killjoys” Season 4 Is a Thrill Ride through the Non-Binary Galaxy

Killjoys Season 4 kicks off tonight, and fanboys and girls alike are eager with anticipation.

The Syfy series follows a trio of interplanetary bounty hunters — Dutch, John, and D’avin (played by Hannah John-Kamen, Aaron Ashmore and Luke Macfarlane) – or “Killjoys,” who are sworn to remain impartial as they chase deadly warrants throughout the Quad, a distant planetary system on the brink of a bloody class war. Tonight, Season 4 kicks off with a bang.

The series’ premise: In working for the Reclamation Apprehension Coalition (RAC), Dutch, John, and D’avin roam the Quad executing warrants to apprehend people or property. According to Wikipedia. “RAC Agents are given high authority by their agency. As part of their job, they swear to remain neutral in conflicts and owe no allegiance to any system, government, or other organizations. With their pasts coming back to haunt them, the trio will have to work hard to keep themselves, and their friends, alive.”

Now that you’re caught up, here’s what’s in store for Season 4:

At the end of Season 3 the trio of Killjoys find themselves scattered to the far corners of the J galaxy and beyond. Dutch is on a journey to face her biggest foe yet, while D’av and John are trapped in an elevator in deep space with a pregnant Delle Seyah. They are united by the knowledge of the name of their true enemy: The Lady, an immeasurable manifestation of evil without beginning or end. The Lady is making her play and these Killjoys have something she wants – the Hullen Heir.

From the very beginning, Killjoys creator Michelle Lovretta has remained committed to building a world populated with all genders and orientations. From non-binary bartender/warlord Pree to royal villain/anti-hero Delle Seyah Kendry and beyond, gay lives and relationships have been given the same dramatic weight, focus and humour as any other — and never merely as victims or cannon fodder for straight characters’ “emotional growth.” As the show has progressed, these relationships have grown into a core part of the series. For the creative team at Killjoys, the goal is to make a show in which everybody, including the LGBTQ community, can see themselves reflected — as heroes, villains, lovers and fighters. “The adventure,” they say, “is for everyone.”
