Can the irrepressible Neil Patrick Harris bring new life to one of TV’s oldest formats?
Variety shows once ruled the airwaves, offering an intoxicating cocktail of music and comedy that drew huge audiences. Who better to revive the format than a song-and-dance man who has hosted the Tonys, Emmys and Oscars?
On Tuesdays this September, Neil Patrick Harris arrives on NBC as host of Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris, a new variety show loosely based on the UK’s popular Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. The show will feature comedy sketches, hidden pranks on celebrities, mini game shows, musical numbers, and special appearances by superstars. Expectations are high for the former-child-star-turned-noted-gay-dad, as this high-profile premiere comes on the heels of his Tony-winning performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and a nearly-10-year run on How I Met Your Mother, but if anyone can make it work, it’s Harris. nbc.com
