It’s been continually beset with cost overruns and bad juju from the press and others who believe that creating a “near-exact” replica of the ill-fated ocean liner is sacrilege, but Titanic 2 is still planned to make its first voyage in 2018.
The Belfast Telegraph, quoting a spokesman for Australian financier Clive Palmer, says the plan to bring an exact replica of the original doomed ship has been pushed back from this year to 2018. The new ship will be identical to the original luxury liner – with a few notable exceptions, namely sufficient lifeboats and state-of-the art radar, digital navigation and satellite controls. In addition, the hull of the new ship will be welded, rather than riveted.
Titanic famously sank in April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage from its English port in Southampton to New York City. Its successor’s first trip will be from Jiangsu in Eastern China to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
