“Trick 2” Will Be A Reality By the 20th Anniversary of the Original

Trick 2, a sequel to the much-beloved gay rom/com of 1999, is in the early stages of pre-production, according to the original film’s director, Jim Fall.

Many Trick fans recall it as the first gay-themed film in years that wasn’t AIDS-related, or that didn’t require some kind of disclaimer — i.e, “it’s a good story, but there’s some bad acting,” or “it looks like it was shot for pennies on the dollar.” Of course, none of that would have made a difference if the film had not been well written and performed by a solid cast.

But it was a movie of its time in telling the story of two young men who meet up and spend the rest of the entire night trying to find a place to let their hormones rage. When it was shot in 1998 Manhattan, the twin towers were still standing and even the film’s title has been replaced by the more au currant “hooking up.”

Fall says the script he’s written deals with the passage of two decades, and will be set in both New York and Los Angeles — and he says the apps (Scruff in particular) play a part in bringing composer Gabriel (Christian Campbell) and his onetime go-go boy crush Mark (J.P. Pitoc) back together — although neither knows the other’s identity at first. Also returning: galpal Katherine (a.k.a. “Puss Puss”), played by Beverly Hills 90210 star Tori Spelling — and of course, the ensemble woulnd’t be complete without an appearance from Miss Coco Peru (Clinton Leupp).

The film’s charms extended beyond its warm and fuzzy romantic inclinations (despite it being ostensibly about two horny young men desperate to find a place to get it on) to the piano bar staple “Como Gusta Mé Penga,” and the discofied Gary Wright classic from the ’70s, “Dreamweaver” — sung in the film by Erin Hamilton, who happens to be the daughter of legendary comedienne Carol Burnett.

The film is expected to be out next year, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original. The first cast reading takes place Friday.
