Wild Tales

Another front-runner for the foreign-language Oscar,

this crowd-pleaser is one of Argentina’s most successful movies ever. Essentially six short films united by a theme of mania, all are sharp and explosively exciting. The phrase “foreign film” may conjure thoughts of too-artsy fare, but Wild Tales is replete with vibrant action, surprising violence and edge-of-your-seat special effects. Plots are equally twisted and intelligent (with underlying themes about the temptations and pleasures inherent in losing control); production values are top notch; and the cast includes many of Argentina’s biggest stars. THE WORD: The stories have the ring of urban legends, and the audience never has a moment to get bored. COMING TO: Theaters
