Will You Sink Your Teeth into Vampire-Themed Cinema Musical Wicked Clone?

Identical twin vampire sisters are taking center stage at the Davenport Theater in Wicked Clone. The duo, in previews as of March 1, will be played by Indiggo Twins Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea and have their opening night on Thursday, March 8.

Based on Mihaela’s popular novel Wicked Clone or How to Deal with the Evil, the piece reimagines every preconception audiences might have about vampires. Its format is a “cinema musical” — a new genre that combines elements of theater and film — that will feature 21 pieces of original songs and choreography.

First produced in June 2012, Wicked Clone tells the story of identical Transylvanian twin sisters born in 1483, now living in present-day New York City. Mihaela, who was born without a heartbeat or any inspiration, runs away from Transylvania to New York and rips her fangs out so she can live like a human being. Her evil twin sister, also known as her “wicked clone” Gabriela, follows Mihaela in an attempt to bring her back to where she came from.

Though it may sound wildly imaginative, Wicked Close does have a little bit of truth behind it. While the real-life version of the story does not feature sexy vampires, it is based on Mihaela’s real-life experience of running away to New York at 24 years old after facing difficulties with Gabriela.

The Grammy-winning, multi-talented sisters were also actually born in Transylvania (Romania). Mihaela is the big sister — being five minutes older than Gabriela. Both girl began playing piano and dancing at 6 years old. They graduated with honors from the University of Theatre and Cinematographic Arts of Bucharest, where both majored in acting.

Mihaela and Gabriela have hit rough patches on their road to success. For example, in 2008, during the Las Vegas callback auditions for the American reality TV competition America’s Got Talent, the twins were booed by the audience for their rendition of Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York.

The Indiggo Twins didn’t let this setback rattle them, and they would later find new success — having a sample of their single “La La La” featured on the song “Murder to Excellence” from rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West’s album Watch the Throne.  

Performances of Wicked Clone will be Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm, with matinees Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets may be purchased through telecharge.com or by calling 212-239-6200.
