The new TLC Wedding special Drag Me Down the Aisle stars four fabulous Drag Race alum and is life-affirming as all get out.
We can only hope this “Wedding Special” will morph into a series because its energy is positively infectious. Much like the Queer Eye Fab Five, each queen arrives with a specialty. Bebe Zahara Benet handles decor. Alexis Michelle is on hand for hair and makeup. Thorgy Thor does music and entertainment. And Juju Bee works the fashion. They head to Lancaster to add some of their signature sparkle to the wedding of Bride Emily and Groom John. And over the course of the episode, they all dropped some truly heartwarming words.
On what they bring to the table:
BEBE: We are drag queens. We know how to make things look luscious on a budget. Look at all of this. It’s illusion. It’s perception. And underneath it… I’m a man!
On Emily’s wedding hair and makeup:
ALEXIS: You deserve to look good. We all do.
On Emily’s dress:
JUJU: Fashion is for everybody and every body.
While riding in a horse-drawn carriage:
ALEXIS: Who knows if Lancaster has ever seen this much vibrant color in the daytime?
On her makeup philosophy:
ALEXIS: Makeup is just a tool to remind you of how beautiful you really are.
On Emily’s motivation:
THORGY: She needs a skip in her step and a kick in her but.
On Emily’s Dad wanting to meet Thorgy out of drag:
THORGY: Maybe it’s a little intimidating – how gorgeous I am.
The queens see Emily in her dress:
EMILY: I still feel nervous. I just don’t feel beautiful.
BEBE: We relate to that as queens because we work through it every day.
ALEXIS: It’s a daily journey.
On the nature of drag:
THORGY: Drag is not about becoming a different person. It’s about channeling the essence of who you really are inside.
ALEXIS: And really drag allowed us to love ourselves.
JUJU: And that’s why we’re here. We’re here to teach Emily that.
BEBE: And to give her the confidence to be a beautiful person inside and out.
On the nature of love:
BEBE: Emily’s John already sees her as that queen. We’ve got to let every single person to see her exactly the way John sees her.
His initial impressions:
JOHN: I have never met a drag queen before, and I met four of them all at once. You can’t be prepared for that. That’s a lot of energy.
On loving the one you’re with:
BEBE: John, I want to know what can we do to make this day fabulous for you, too.
JOHN: Anything that Emily wants.
On being out of drag:
THORGY: I know I’ve made a life into being Thorgy, this outrageous character, but I also wake up in the morning, and I feel good about who I am.
On the power of music:
THORGY: Honestly, the moment me and Paul started playing together, all that awkwardness just disappeared. It’s amazing that communicating through music and art connects pople.
On making connections:
THORGY: We really put ourselves out there, and we’ve been through a lot of trials and tribulations and a lot of struggles to find out who we are inside.
PAUL: Honestly, I’m completely comfortable with you. It’s really more what other people might think. We’re just two human beings.
THORGY: I like you very much right away.
On seeing if something fits:
JUJU: You really don’t know what you like until you’ve tried it. I didn’t know I liked sushi until I tried it.
On finding her light:
ALEXIS: I was such a colorful, loud, energetic little boy, and over the years I became more self-conscious. And it was really drag that helped me find that light again and helped me love myself.
On the right finger to use:
ALEXIS: Always use your ring finger when applying product under the eye. Your fourth finger has the least amount of muscle, and this skin below your eyes is very delicate.
The ceremony:
EMILY: I will love you when we are together and when we are apart.
JOHN: I will honor your goals and dreams and help you to fulfill them.
On his bride:
JOHN: I’ve never seen anybody look like this, including Emily.
On Emily’s confidence and beauty:
ALEXIS: No matter who you are or where you’re from, there’s a queen in all of us.
