Andrew Garfield Cast in National Theatre’s "Angels in America"

London’s National Theatre has announced Andrew Garfield will star as Prior Walter in an upcoming production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.

The production is slated to begin April 2017 and will be directed by Marianne Elliott. Kushner’s milestone AIDS play is written in two parts, each a full-length play: Millennium Approaches (1991) and Perestroika (1992). It premiered on Broadway in 1993 with Stephen Spinella playing Prior, a gay man with AIDS. Justin Kirk played the role in HBO’s 2003 adaptation, and Michael Urie more recently at Signature Theatre off-Broadway. Its British premiere was in 1992, making the National’s production a 25th anniversary.

Garfield is known for his film work as the title role in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, and as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. He played Broadway in 2012 in Death of a Salesman, which earned him a Tony nomination. He’ll be joined by Elizabeth McGovern, whom we’re currently adoring as Lady Grantham on Downton Abbey.

Additional plays for the National’s 2016–2017 season include David Hare’s The Red Barn directed by Robert Icke, and Hedda Gabler directed by Ivo van Hove. More of the season including further casting will be announced later. The National is currently represented on Broadway by the excellent Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
