Bette Midler’s name conjures so many memories: legendary shows at the Continental Baths, on Broadway and in Las Vegas; acclaimed appearances on SNL and Johnny Carson’s penultimate Tonight Show; bravura performances in films such as The Rose and For the Boys. Through it all, the ever-versatile chanteuse has always exhibited great taste in songs, so it makes perfect sense that the artist — whose first hit was a snappy take on The Andrews’ Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” — would make her 14th studio album a salute to her favorite songs by female vocal groups. Midler offers jaunty takes on classics such as “Bei Mir Bist du Schön” and “Mr. Sandman.”Things get more wisftul on tracks like a surprising re-imagining of TLC’s “Waterfalls.” Other standouts include a duet with Academy Award winner Darlene Love on “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and a country-inflected take on “You Can’t Hurry Love.”
