Cameron Esposito: People We Love 2018

Those familiar with the comedy scene will recognize Cameron Esposito from years of doing stand-up and creating opportunities for others to do so in events like Put Your Hands Together. But in recent years, the out comedian’s output seems to have exploded.

There was her series Take My Wife with spouse Rhea Butcher, which explored the realities of life and relationships — especially those challenges met by women and queer people. There’s her spectacular podcast Queery, on which she shares in-depth conversations about the LGBTQ experience with members of the community both more and less recognizable. From tackling the politics of gendered pronouns with (one of last year’s People We Love) Jill Soloway to hashing out the insecurities of Nancy co-host (and one of last year’s People We Love) Kathy Tu to a raucous conversation with (someone we always love) Lea Delaria about developing an affection for one’s favorite sexual aids, Queery is at turns hilarious and heartbreaking, concerned and celebratory, and we could not recommend it more. To top it all off, her 2018 stand-up special Rape Jokes saw Esposito pushing the envelope — daring to mix her signature hilarity with decidedly not comedic confessions about surviving sexual assault, with proceeds benefitting RAINN, the largest US anti-sexual violence organization. Why has Esposito dared to dedicate so much time and energy to expanding our community’s visibility? “I think of every member of the LGBTQ+ community as family,” she told Metrosource. And she hopes to “continue to work to advance safety, equality and access to opportunity for all queer folks.
