Cover Girl Cyndi Lauper Shows Her True Colors

Kinky Boots collaborators Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper each received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this week. And we have Ms. Lauper on the cover of Metrosource next month – in our annual Pride issue, which hits the stands May 16!

Both used the opportunity to express concern about the so-called “religious freedom” bills sweeping the less progressive states. One of those states, North Carolina, is set to host a run of Kinky Boots at the Durham Performing Arts Center later this year.

The pair agreed that Kinky Boots will keep the topic of diversity alive and well during its run. “We’re bringing Kinky Boots to North Carolina because we happen to have the exact message they need to hear,” Fierstein said.

“This all started with transgender people using their own bathroom, and we even have a scene in the show where our transvestite lead goes into the bathroom – the whole scene takes place in a mens’ room so it’s like sometimes you have to carry the message. It’s really great Springsteen’s best way to do it is not to show up. Sometimes the best thing to do is to show up.”

Ultimately, Lauper added, “we’re all free or we’re not free at all.”
