What do you need to know about “The Devil Wear Prada” musical adaptation? Fabulous couture will meet fierce cattiness in 2021. That’s when Elton John’s fresh stage adaptation of celebrated comedy blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada arrives. The hotly anticipated, Broadway-bound production is based on both the 2003 Lauren Weisberger novel and Aline Brosh McKenna’s 2006 film script.
Notably, The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical features a script by two LGBTQ icons. Grammy Award-winning legend Elton John provides the score. And the book (i.e. narrative structure and dialogue) is by Paul Rudnick(of Jeffrey, In & Out and First Wives Club fame. They worked in collaboration with lyricist Shaina Taub of 2018’s smash hit Central Park Twelfth Night. Uber-producer Kevin McCollum leads the producing team. Anna D. Shapiro directs.

Who will step into the snarky stilettos of Miranda Priestly? Tony Award winner Beth Leavel will take the role, which was worn so well by Meryl Streep in the feature film. Meanwhile, fresh-faced Taylor Iman Jones will be in the Anne Hathaway role of Andy. We expect the production to announce further casting soon. It’s worth noting that popular gay comedian and Sex and the City star Mario Cantone has participated in workshops of the piece. So we expect he’s in the running for the role of Nigel, the gay character memorably played by Stanley Tucci.

The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical opens on July 13, 2021 at the CIBC Theater under the auspices of Broadway In Chicago. It’s scheduled to run there through August 15. We expect it to open on Broadway soon after that. However, we are still awaiting the official announcement of its theater and opening night.
