This Is What’s Gay in the 2020 Golden Globe Nominations

What’s gay about the 2020 Golden Globe Nominations? We’re running down the LGBTQ stories and storytellers who might take home an award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on Sunday January 5.

Elton John Related Globe Nominations

The career of Sir Elton John will be well-represented. He wrote music for The Lion King. And its “live action” remake is nominated for Best Animated Film. Meanwhile, Rocketman, the biopic about his life, scored a nod for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. Accordingly, his “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” is a nominee for Best Song. And Taron Egerton will vie for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy, for playing the snazzy songwriter.

Globe Nominations with Foreign Flair

Gay director Pedro Almadóvar’s Pain and Glory got a nod for Best Foreign Film. And the Globes nominated Antonio Banderas in the category for playing the lead role – a film director generally seen as an avatar for Almadóvar. (The pair discussed their relationship here. In related news, sapphic French period romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire also snagged a nod for Best Foreign film.

And while we’re toasting Broadway’s gay leading men, raise a glass to fellow Tony-winner Ben Platt. He’s nominated for Best Actor, TV Musical or Comedy for starring in The Politician. The show also snagged a nod for Best TV Musical or Comedy. In that category, you’ll also find nominee, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which recently revealed a significant gay character. LGBTQ-Adjacent Globe Nominations

Beanie Feldstein is nominated as Best Actress, Musical or Comedy for her role in beloved teen romp Booksmart. Yes, she played the hetero half of the film’s central best-friend pairing. But she gets extra gay points for starring opposite Ben Platt in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. Tom Hanks also earned a nomination for playing Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Many have speculated about Rogers’ sexuality. But the internet briefly dubbed him a “bisexual icon” after comments he’d made about being attracted to both men and women surfaced. And though its central characters were primarily heterosexual, Best TV Miniseries/Movie nominee Fosse/Verdon offered an exciting look at the gay-embracing world of musical theater. Lead actors Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams will both be up for acting awards for their titles roles in the series, as well. And, speaking of musical theater, Renée Zellwegger will compete for Best Actress in a motion picture drama for playing the titular gay icon in Judy.
