This Week in Hate: Karen Pence, Gillette Reactions and Gay “Parents”

This week in hate: a pundit defends Karen Pence’s right to hate, the internet loses its mind over a Gillette ad, and there’s a petition against a parenting magazine for displaying gay parents on its cover.

A Wall Street Journal Columnist Told the World to Shut Up about Mike and Karen Pence Hating Gay People

The Wall Street Journal‘s William McGurn wants to know: “Will no one speak up for Karen Pence other than her husband?” Mrs. Pence says she’ll be teaching part-time at Immanuel Christian School in Northern Virginia — a private K-8 academy that subscribes to a Biblically-based (read: anti-LGBTQ) view of human sexuality.

McGurn is in a twist that the Veep’s spouse “has become a public face of hate.” He also takes offense that CNN’s John King suggested that “what Mrs. Pence has done is so grievous maybe taxpayers shouldn’t fund her Secret Service security protection,” and that the American Civil Liberties Union says Mrs. Pence is sending “a terrible message to students.” He disapproves of The Guardian’s assessment that Mrs. Pence keeps “the vice-president’s dangerous bigotry” on the front burner of public discourse, and the news that Lady Gaga stopped mid-song in Vegas to denounce the Second Couple as “the worst representation of what it means to be Christian.”

“Today’s militant secularists ironically resemble the worst caricatures of religious intolerance of early America,” McGurn concludes. “Where the Puritans humiliated sinners with the stocks, the modern intolerant have Twitter. Where the Amish shunned those who lived contrary to their beliefs, today’s violators find themselves driven off the public square. And whereas in Hawthorne’s novel Hester Prynne was forced to wear a scarlet ‘A’ — for adulterer – today we have folks such as Jimmy Kimmel using their popular platforms to paint the scarlet ‘H’ — for hater — on people such as Mrs. Pence.”

Those darned liberals, he implies. Why do they tolerate everything but intolerance?

The Internet Keeps Freaking Out about Gillette’s Toxic Masculinity Commercial

Gillette’s recent “toxic masculinity” ad is now rising in the charts as the 28th most disliked YouTube video of all time (at number 12 once you exclude music video). The commercial now hovers beneath Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”, Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang” and Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop.”

As the world now knows, the ad asked pointedly, “Is this the best a man can get?” in a riff on Gillette’s venerated tagline, “The best a man can get”. The much-praised commercial addressed a variety of topics, including bullying, sexual harassment and the what constitutes masculinity these days. See the video for yourself:

People Are Shocked that “Parents” Has a Gay Couple on the Cover

“Parents” magazine recently took to social media to tout its first cover featuring same-sex parents: “Fitness pro @ShaunT and his adorable family star on our February cover, our first-ever to feature same-sex parents.”

In response, One Million Moms (whose membership is nowhere close to that) fired up a petition lambasting Parents for using their magazine as a platform to promote a “pro-homosexual lifestyle.” The Mill Moms want parents to shudder that the publication might be in the waiting rooms of dentist and doctor’s offices, where children could easily be subjected to the “glorification” of same-sex parenting. (This is where we’re all supposed to gasp.) It implored readers to cancel their magazine subscriptions and insisted that the “medical community” (without citing any individuals or organization) views the gay lifestyle as “unhealthy.”

Facebook has subsequently removed the petition from their platform.

Those are just some of the many horrible, homophobic and hateful things that caught our eye this week. What’s on your last nerve right now?
