Lizzo Does Texas: Why We Stan Her SXSW Speech

She has millions of fans. She has Grammys and gusto. She has one of the best Insta-handles ever devised.

Lizzo can take anything… except for your bulls***, ma’am.

“I’m proud to rep Houston, but I’m not proud to rep Texan politics right now.”

The Lone Star pop star spoke up and lashed out at SXSW, addressing the fact that her home state is embroiled in a whole lot of nonsense right damn now.

“We got a lot of other things y’all need to be handling instead of y’all being in people’s homes, telling them what to do with they body and being all up their uteruses. Mind your business! Because the abortion ban is atrocious.”

One of the (many) reasons why we love Ms. L is that her empowerment emanates from personal experiences ever outward to the communities she holds dear.

“There are very regressive laws being passed,” Lizzo continued. “They are taking away the right for young children to live authentically as themselves, and it’s a violation of human rights.”

Punctuating her point, she declared, “Trans rights are human rights. Period.”

Lizzo’s recent missive was just the latest in a heroic herstory of allyship. But she doesn’t just pay lip service to queer rights; she dives in deep.

“When it comes to sexuality or gender, I personally don’t ascribe to just one thing,” Lizzo told Teen Vogue back in 2018. “That’s why the colors for LGBTQ+ are a rainbow!”

Her words tickle us pink and make us paint the town red. Lizzo is, quite simply, the soundtrack to self-esteem supreme!

All you other spokes-peeps take note: this is what true strength looks/sounds/feels like.

“Because I fight for myself, I have to fight for everyone else.”

Turns out, she’s 100% that icon. We love the hell outta you, Lizzo!
