Will Outspoken Madame Gandhi Wow Audiences at the Dinah?

Kiran Gandhi is better known by her stage name Madame Gandhi — and as an electronic music artist, singer, drummer and activist.

The multi-talented Gandhi will be taking the stage in Palm Springs, California at the Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend (also known as “The Dinah”) March 28-April 1 of this year.

Gandhi, who is 28-years-old, came to international attention in 2015 when she ran the London Marathon “free bleeding” during her menstrual cycle to bring awareness to feminine hygiene stigma. Since then, she has become a notable figure in the feminist movement, thanks in part to moments like her well-received TED Talk about atomic living. With her music and more, she encourages women to better themselves and to speak out against misogyny.

“I want music to make feminism culturally relevant. I want my music to make gender equality culturally even more relevant,” Gandhi said in a press release.

The American-Indian artist grew up in New York City and Bombay, India. She attended Georgetown University and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, political science, and women’s studies in 2011. She then became the first-ever digital analyst at Interscope Records, analyzing Spotify patterns with her math skills.

Gandhi had previously played drums for the band Thievery Corporation at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and has also performed at SXSW music and film festival. She recorded drum tracks for rap artist M.I.A.’s Bad Girls in 2012, and later joined M.I.A. on her 2013 world tour as her drummer while studying for her M.B.A. at Harvard School of Business. Recently, the young artist was the opening act for for Ani DiFranco’s Rise Up tour.

Gandhi’s EP, Voices, came out in 2016, and her debut album is in the works. She continues to speak out about female empowerment.
