NC Gov. McCrory Seeking Middle Ground with Gays

In an effort to pacify both gays and the people who support their rights to equal treatment under the law, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory announced Tuesday that he has signed an executive order that protects LGBT state employees from discrimination.

In his statment, McCrory once again asserted his intention to amend North Carolina’s recently-enacted “religious freedom” bill (House Bill 2) to reinstate the right to sue for discrimination in state courts.

Today’s action does nothing to reinstate local LGBT protections, nor does it roll back the controversial “bathroom bill” portion of HB 2. As such, members of the LGBT community remain exempt from protections in North Carolina in areas of employment, housing, and public accommodation protections, just as they are in many other states.
