Netflix’ Gay RomCom. Harry’s Princely Gesture, and Han Solo Flies Again

It seems like no one loves Love, Simon like Netflix. Plus, Prince Harry makes a noble royal gesture, and Chewy’s new copilot is a hottie.

After the water had been well-tested by the critical acclaim and financial success of that charming After-School special on coming out known as Love, Simon, Netflix is ready to ride those big gay coattails with a romantic comedy called Alex Strangelove.

Just last month, the film exploits of a teen exploring his sexual orientation was set to premiere in San Francisco at the International Film Festival before rolling out in July. But now, according to a report from NewNowNext, that date has been moved up to June 8 — just in time to coincide with many of the nation’s major citie’s Pride events.

Here’s the synopsis provided by Netflix:

“Alex Strangelove tells the story of Alex Truelove, a well-rounded high school senior with a wonderful girlfriend Claire and a bright future ahead of him – and with plans to achieve his last teenage milestone by losing his virginity. But things get complicated when he meets Elliot, a handsome and charming gay kid from the other side of town, who unwittingly sends Alex on a rollercoaster journey of sexual identity, kicking off a hilarious and moving exploration of love, sex and friendship in our liberated and confusing modern times.”

Netflix says the show was written and directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins, Wilson) and stars Daniel Doheny, Madeline Weinstein (Beach Rats) and Antonio Marziale (Altered Carbon). The film was produced by Ben Stiller, Nicky Weinstock, and Jared Ian Goldman.

Director Johnson told the media outlet that his film is “a fun, funny, and flirty film located down the street from Pretty in Pink, around the corner from Superbad, and right next door to new neighbor: Love, Simon.”

Wild About Harry

The UK is going bonkers over everything remotely connected to the impending royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are set to marry May 19 at Windsor Castle. Harry is of course, fifth in line to the throne of England.

While there’s always been speculation that Harry is not actually the fruit of Charles’ loom, there’s never been any doubt that his mother was Diana, Princess of Wales — a staunch advocate for HIV education, assitance and research during her lifetime.

And now the Prince is encouraging those who want to wish one of the wealthiest men in the world a happlily forever after to donate to an HIV-related charity in the name of the royal couple rather than send wedding presents.

There are other charities on the list as well. According to a release from Kensington Palace, “Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill shown to them since the announcement of their engagement and are keen that as many people as possible benefit from this generosity of spirit.”

The statement goes on to stay that the couple asks that “anyone who might wish to mark the occasion considers making a donation to charity, rather than sending a wedding gift.”

The Prince and Ms. Markle selected seven organizations they personally would like to support, which, says the release, reflect “their shared values.”
