Broadcast Journalist Ronan Farrow Officially Joins the LGBT Community

After years of speculation, gossip and innuendo, broadcast journalist (and yes, actress Mia Farrow’s son) Ronan Farrow has come out.

Farrow, who was honored last night the Courage Award for his reporting on sexual assault by the Point Foundation, took the opportunity to publicly declare himself a member of the LGBT community.

The award was presented by Thomas Roberts, another gay MSNBC alumnus. Both men saw their programs cancelled when the network couldn’t find a way to increase their daytime shows’ ratings.

Recipients of the Courage Award, according to the foundation, are those “who have advocated for the future of the LGBTQ and allied community and believe investing in today’s potential will produce a brighter tomorrow.”

A press release from the Point Foundation included the following from Farrow: “Being a part of the LGBT community – which recognized that reporting I was doing early on and elevated it, and has been such a stalwart source of support through the sexual assault reporting I did involving survivors who felt equally invisible – that has been an incredible source of strength for me. LGBT people are some of the bravest and most potent change agents and leaders I have encountered, and the most forceful defenders of the vulnerable and voiceless, because they know what it’s like to be there.”

Farrow rose to prominence during his mother’s separation from his father, director Woody Allen, in 1992. He was often publicly critical of Allen’s relationship with Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, going so far as to tweet on a recent Father’s Day, “Happy Father’s Day — or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law’s day.”

His sexual orientation had been the subject of curiosity in media circles for some time. On numerous occasions, he had avoided discussing his personal life beyond the tabloid-ready revelations about his father and step-sister. Mystery solved. Welcome home, Ronan.

The Point Foundation was featured in our 2015 Companies That Care.
