Obama to Name Stonewall a National Landmark

How far has the fight for LGBT rights brought us? Here’s how far: President Barack Obama is preparing to name Stonewall Inn in New York City the first national monument to gay rights.

According to reports from The Washington Post, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and the head of the National Park Service will visit New York nest week for consultations on the proposal.
Also in attendance: Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) who will be part of a “listening session” to hear feedback on the pitch. Barring municipal conflicts or complications, the president could make his announcement as soon as next month.

Stonewall, of course, is the locus of riots in 1969, where drag queens and gay brethren kicked off the gay rights movement by resisting police during an attempted raid.
