Paul Mescal + Josh O’Connor = A Match Made in Homo Heaven

Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal are collaborating on a queer period film… a queeriod film, if you will.

The History of Sound is set against the tumult of World War I, but the love story soars above the fray and into a same-sex celestial wonderland. The two main characters devote themselves to documenting the lyrical, whimsical, passionate audio of the era and wind up discovering a taboo desire for one another in the process.

The smoldering stars are no strangers to sweeping romance. O’Connor won an Emmy for his turn as Prince Charles in The Crown. His portrayal captured the essence of a conflicted soul unable to connect with the woman in his life, no matter how charismatic she may have been.

Perhaps he was yearning for a true soul mate?

Which brings us to Paul Mescal, the heartthrob at the beating center of Normal People. Fans swooned en masse to the steamy sex scenes featured prominently in the streaming series, which begs the question: how will Mescal’s incendiary charm translate to the forthcoming LGBTQ drama?

Perhaps O’Connor can coach his co-star ever so lovingly. After all, he got his gay start as a lusty sheep herder in the 2017 movie God’s Own Country. His character argues with an impossibly hunky farmhand before giving him an actual tongue-lashing…

…we’re talking about oral sex.

There’s no indication whether or not O’Connor and Mescal will engage in any such lip service in The History of Sound, but we are simply excited at the permutations and possibilities that these two dreamboats conjure in our fertile imaginations.

Director Oliver Hermanus discussed the casting coup with Variety.

“Paul and Josh are two of the most promising actors of their generation who will share with us deeply soulful performances. This is an unexpected love story that needs to be told — it is a journey through the life of America, across the 20th century and the traditions of American folk music, all seen through the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound. This undeniably powerful story will certainly resonate with audiences the world over.”

We are already humming a happy tune just picturing the pairing.
