REVIEW: The Lobster

This film is very strange, but more importantly, it’s immersive, engaging and has something to say.

David (played by Colin Farrell) lives in an otherwise normal-looking world where single people are taken to a resort where they have 45 days to find a partner or will be turned into the animal of their choice and released into the woods. These woods are also home to rogue single people whom the guests of the resort are made to hunt in exchange for extra days of mate-seeking. At the resort, Farrell bonds with fellow loners (including the indispensible John C. Reilly and young gay rising star Ben Whishaw) until a wild series of events leads him to meet a woman (played by Rachel Weisz). The world that the film creates is masterfully complete and consistently walks a tightrope between hilarity and darkness, offering comments on society, humanity, love and conformity. THE WORD: Being made to laugh and feel a bit disturbed at the same time is a pretty special experience. COMING TO: Theaters
