Steve Grand is used to the idea that some find him as appealing for his looks as for his music. He’s always gracious and happy to pose for photos after the show, as he demonstrated yet again after a night playing to a packed house in Provincetown. He’s also happy to sell you a t-shirt with his likeness on it, although it’s his talent that he’s really trying to keep center stage.
It’s something of a double-edged sword for the entertainer. Like George Michael and Ricky Martin before him, gay fans often appreciate merchandise with some eye candy attached. So you have to please your public. But, as Grand says, every once in a while a fan thinks that by pushing the envelope of what’s considered appropriate behavior in public, he just might get lucky.
That’s where Grand draws the line between selling his products and putting his integrity up to the highest bidder. The question we asked was this: “We’ve seen women throw their panties at Tom Jones back in his heyday. We’ve seen a whole different generation of women toss their hotel keys up onto the stage for Tracy Chapman. What’s the weirdest thing a guy has ever done to try to get your attention? His answer was as honest as it was adorably disarming.
