Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for playing Stephen Hawking in last year’s The Theory of Everything. It’s early, of course, but the trailer for his upcoming role is looking like we might see a repeat.
Redmayne is playing the Danish artist Lili Elbe, born Einar Wegener in Focus Features’ upcoming The Danish Girl. Wegener was born in 1880s Denmark and was a prizewinning illustrator. In 1930, he began a series of gender-reassignment surgery. The Danish Girl, adapted from David Ebershoff’s 2000 novel by the same name and directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), looks at the period where Wegener became Elbe, and that transition’s affect on his marriage with artist Gerda Wegener.
The film comes out plum in in the middle of prestige season on November 27.
