Will This Be the Largest Rainbow Flag Celebrating WorldPride?

FDR Four Freedoms State Park will play host to an enormous Pride Flag in celebration of WorldPride and Stonewall 50.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor were champions of human rights. Consequently, it makes sense that their legacy should continue this Pride month. FDR Four Freedoms State Park will celebrate the LGBTQ community by turning its signature staircase into a giant Pride Flag. So, from June 14 to June 30, visitors can climb the stairs with pride and share selfies with the hashtag #AscendwithPride.

Where Can You Find It?

FDR Four Freedoms State Park is located at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. The park is the first memorial dedicated to the former president in his home state of New York. Its celebration of LGBTQ rights is in keeping with its mission to salute FDR’s commitment to essential human freedoms.

What Are the Four Freedoms?

President Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms lay the groundwork for the Park and its mission. The Four Freedoms include freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. These four ideals feature in one of FDR’s most famous speeches, which was given just a few months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Afterwards, United Nations General Assembly adopted them as fundamental aspects of basic human rights.

These freedoms are still a driving force in the campaign for essential human rights today. In particular, Roosevelt’s assertion that humans deserve the freedom to express themselves aligns perfectly with values of WorldPride. Especially during Pride month, the Park and its Conservancy will follow in his footsteps by modeling inclusivity, equality, and understanding.

How Big Is It?

Thanks to the FDR Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, the park’s monumental staircase will become New York City’s largest Pride Flag. The flag will transform the steps into a 12 by 100 foot invitation to celebrate. It will honor both progress that has been made over the past 50 years and shine a light on the LGBTQ community’s continuing fight for universal human rights.

The flag will be officially unveiled as of Saturday, June 15 with a free celebration including food trucks, a special picnic on the lawn, and a very special Drag Queen Story Hour.
