Robert Mapplethorpe will have a major moment this spring. In 2011, two LA institutions partnered to make a landmark acquisition and gift acceptance of art and archival materials from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.
This March, they’ll present complementary, simultaneous exhibitions of more than 300 of his nudes, still lifes and artifacts under the singular title “The Perfect Medium.” The LACMA’s (March 20–July 31) is set up in five thematic galleries; the Getty’s (March 15–July 31), in two sections exploring Mapplethorpe as artist and businessman. Visit mapplethorpe.la for info on both.
