Sasha Velour Talks about How Winning “Drag Race” Will Change Your Life!

Sasha Velour won RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2017, and her world shifted overnight on its own axis.

As every performer who’s ever competed on the show knows, even being selected to appear as a contestant on the show raises a queen’s visibility (and marketability) exponentially. So far, the show has already helped to launch such movies as the Hurricane Bianca series, provided a springboard for the ongoing Alyssa Edwards Netflix series Dancing Queen and set the stage for an endless array of personal appearances sponsored by the parent company of RuPaul’s Drag Race — World of Wonder.

And of course when DragCon drops into either New York or LA, not even light can escape its gravitational pull. While fans roam the convention hall corridors buying memorabilia, drag accessories, attending panel after panel to collect the latest selfies and autographs, Sasha and the other queens are busy running back and forth between the fans and press opportunities upstairs.

That’s where we caught up with the glamorous Ms. Velour, just short of a year wearing her RuPaul’s crown. We last chatted less than 24 hours after she won her title, when she was still giddy with delight.

A year later, she’s older (though you’d never know it to look at her) and wiser, and she’s seen a lot more of the world. But, as she says in our exclusive video — some things never change.

Sasha: Metrosource wants to know: What’s the biggest difference in my life from before winning Drag Race to now? And the answer is: I’m doing exactly the same things. I’m still not sleeping. I still take everything I do way too seriously. And I drive everyone in my life crazy. But the good thing is: everything is happening on such a huge scale. It’s like, we used to produce shows for a tiny bar in Brooklyn and that gave me all the satisfaction I needed. And now, we’re in a giant theater like Terminal 5, basically doing the same Goddamn show, but people are finally paying attention, and that’s really satisfying.
